What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an effective form of medical treatment that has evolved into a complete holistic health care system. At its core is the philosophy of Qi (pronounced “chee”), the vital energy, that flows throughout the body. Qi animates the body and protects it from illness, pain, and disease. Through acupuncture, an individual’s Qi is optimized resulting in enhanced recuperative power and immunity, increased physical and emotional stress, as well as improved overall function and well-being.

What should I expect during my first visit?

During an initial examination, a full health history will be taken and specific questions will be asked regarding symptoms, health, and lifestyle. Your tongue and pulse may also be checked to help determine if a blockage or imbalance of Qi is present. Once examined, treatment is extremely individualized and consists of fine, sterile needles being placed at specific acupoints on the body to activate the body’s Qi. Adjunct treatments may also include cupping and auricular needles.

What type of conditions does Acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture is recognized by leading national and international health organizations to be effective in the treatment of a wide variety of medial problems. These include, but are not limited to, adverse reactions to chemotherapy, abdominal pain, allergies, arthritis, anxiety, back pain, cancer pain, morning sickness, infertility, fibromyalgia, headache, hypertension, insomnia, nausea, neck pain, obesity, and tobacco dependence.

Is Acupuncture safe for children?

Yes. In some instances children actually respond more quickly than adults. For ages four through ten, your acupuncturist may massage the acupuncture points instead of using needles. This is called acupressure. At New Heights, a specific form of acupressure called “sho ni shin” is utilized.
